Who Is “The King”?
The King is a fictional character created to personify the Burger King brand. He is:
- Dressed in royal attire, complete with a robe, crown, and jeweled rings
- Recognized by his large plastic smiling head—a permanent, cartoonish grin
- Silent (never speaks) but expressive in actions
- Known for appearing in unexpected or humorous situations, often “magically” offering a Whopper
🎬 A Brief History of The King
- 1950s–1970s: The original Burger King mascot was an animated, friendly cartoon king in TV commercials targeted at children.
- 2004–2011: The modern version of The King—the one with the plastic mask—was reintroduced by Crispin Porter + Bogusky as part of a surreal and edgy ad campaign. He became a viral sensation.
- 2011: The King was temporarily retired to shift focus to food quality and move away from the offbeat tone.
- 2015–Present: The King was reintroduced due to fan demand and nostalgia. He’s now seen in ads, NFL tie-ins, and even crossover appearances like boxing matches or comedy skits.
📺 Famous Ad Moments
- “Wake Up with the King”: He’s seen lying next to someone in bed, offering a breakfast sandwich. A perfect example of Burger King’s bizarre humor.
- Burger King vs. McDonald’s ads: The King often appears silently mocking or upstaging the McDonald’s clown in clever ways.
- Super Bowl spots: The King has starred in several big-budget commercials during major events, increasing his cultural recognition.
🤯 Cultural Impact
- Became a meme and internet favorite due to his weird, uncanny look
- Appeared in video games (like Sneak King on Xbox 360)
- Referenced or parodied in shows, YouTube videos, and social media
- Symbolizes Burger King’s willingness to embrace weird, bold advertising
🤔 Why He Works
- Memorable: You don’t forget a mascot that’s both regal and a little creepy.
- Silent but effective: No dialogue keeps the character mysterious and universally understandable.
- Associates humor with the brand: Helps distinguish Burger King from more traditional fast food ads.
Final Thoughts
The King is more than just a mascot—he’s a marketing icon that helped define Burger King’s unique voice in a competitive fast food landscape. Whether you find him hilarious or a little creepy, you can’t deny: when The King shows up, you know it’s Burger King.

Burger King, often abbreviated as BK, is a global chain of hamburger fast food restaurants headquartered in unincorporated Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The company began in 1953 as Insta-Burger King, a Jacksonville, Florida-based restaurant chain. After Insta-Burger King ran into financial difficulties in 1954, its two Miami-based franchisees, David Edgerton and James McLamore, purchased the company and renamed it Burger King. Over the next half century, the company would change hands four times, with its third set of owners, a partnership of TPG Capital, Bain Capital, and Goldman Sachs Capital Partners, taking it public in 2002. In late 2010, 3G Capital of Brazil acquired a majority stake in BK in a deal valued at US$3.26 billion. The new owners promptly initiated a restructuring of the company to reverse its fortunes. 3G, along with partner Berkshire Hathaway, eventually merged the company with Canadian-based doughnut chain Tim Hortons under the auspices of a new Canadian-based parent company, Restaurant Brands International.
